Andrew is the company’s lead analyst of the Chinese economy and manages the Gavekal Dragonomics China research team in Beijing. He has lived and worked in China since 1998, and over the course of a long career as an award-winning journalist and analyst has written hundreds of articles on Chinese business, government, economics and society. Before joining Gavekal in 2011, he was the China economics correspondent for The Wall Street Journal. Andrew was born in (and married in) New Orleans, Louisiana, and has a degree in anthropology from Reed College.
Chris works with the team of China analysts to shape and refine their research, and writes on China’s economy and policy environment. Chris joined Gavekal Dragonomics from Bridgewater Associates, where he served as the firm’s lead economic policy analyst covering China. Prior to Bridgewater, he worked as an opinion columnist for Reuters, based in Hong Kong, and as an analyst covering Chinese economic policy at Eurasia Group in Washington, DC. Chris holds a masters’ degree in international economics and international relations from The Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and an undergraduate degree in history from Carleton College.
A native of Tianjin, Ernan Cui joined Gavekal's Beijing office in 2013 as an analyst mainly covering consumer issues in China. She previously interned at Standard Chartered and Accenture, and was a part-time researcher at the University of Chicago's Beijing Center. Ernan graduated from Renmin University of China with an MA in economics and a double bachelor’s degree in economics and mathematics.
Thomas covers the Chinese corporate universe from our Beijing office. He joined Gavekal in 2012 after graduating with an MBA from Tsinghua University (Beijing) as valedictorian of his class and a Beijing Government, Tsinghua and Volkswagen scholar. He documented this experience as a guest blogger for the Financial Times. Previously, Thomas spent two years as a Research Associate with MWM Consulting in London. He joined JP Morgan's London-based 'structuring and solutions' team in 2006 as a Financial Analyst after graduating with a first-class honours degree in English Literature from Oxford. Thomas received his CFA charter in 2015, and has an MA with distinction in Medieval History from Birkbeck College, University of London.
Wei He previously worked at Financial Times Confidential, where he wrote on a wide range of macroeconomic and financial topics, as well as Marketnews International. A Beijinger, he got a BA majoring in finance at Peking University, and an MA in politics at New York University.
Arthur founded the China macroeconomic research firm Dragonomics in Beijing 2002, after 15 years as a freelance journalist and economic analyst in Asia. The company merged with Gavekal in 2007, and since 2011 Arthur has overseen all of Gavekal's research efforts. His book China's Economy: What Everyone Needs to Know is a widely used textbook and reference work. He divides his time between New York and Beijing and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the National Committee on US-China Relations.
Tom writes about emerging markets, specializing in China and its role in the world. A former journalist, he has reported from a dozen countries in Asia. He has appeared in the Financial Times, Economist, New York Times, Washington Post and Wall Street Journal, and on the BBC, CNN and CNBC. Tom holds a first-class degree in English Literature from Oxford, a master's degree in Chinese Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies in London, and spent two years studying Chinese at universities in Beijing. He is the author of two acclaimed books. His first, China’s Urban Billion: The Story Behind the Biggest Migration in Human History, was published in 2012 and translated into Chinese. His second, China’s Asian Dream: Empire Building Along the New Silk Road, was published in 2017. After 14 years in China, Tom now lives in Oxford.
Tilly writes on China’s semiconductor, internet and broader technology industry. She joined Gavekal Dragonomics in 2023 after seven years at Gavekal Fathom China. She has a BA from Xi'an International Studies University, where she majored in journalism and led the anime club. She has lived in 10 cities in China and four in the US. Now in Beijing, she plays tennis and the accordion.
Xiaoxi covers the Chinese financial system, including banking and capital markets. She joined Gavekal Dragonomics in 2019. She has a BA international finance from the Central University of Finance and Economics in Beijing, and an MA in applied economics from Cornell University.
